: Have a Hypocritical Holiday

A friend of mine sent me an email today humorously bemoaning the fact that he could no longer say “Merry Christmas” around his office and co-workers. It is not politically correct to say “Christmas” or even “Happy Holidays” anymore. “Holidays” has its etymology in “holiness” and therefore can not be said. He had to settle for “Happy December” or “Happy Winter.”

The Catholic League and the extreme religious right have been up in arms this year about the extent of the political correctness this holiday (oops, winter) season. Even some Evangelicals have fallen into this trap. Isn’t it hypocritical to bemoan the commercialization of Christmas while we accede to the commercialization in just about every other area of our lives?"

The good news for me is that I don't have to give up Starbucks since I am not being hypocritical. I am not protesting the commercialization of Christmas. I only hope to challenge us to see through the hype to the deeper meaning of the season.

Couldn't we just go with hand signals & not say anything? Maybe a quick 2 fingers, you know - the peace sign? And then a five finger (could represent a Star) delivery. So let's all have a Happy 25th! This could single handedly turn around the economy. Our largest retailers won't have to worry about the backlash against them be the angry Christian faction. So next time you see Aaron or Pastor Dave - just flash the TWO-FIVE & think of Jesus. The Catholic league can't be up in arms about what we think? Can they? Maybe I'd better use a pen name......

I've heard many Christians complain that Christmas is too commercialized. Now that commerce is disconnecting itself from Christmas I hear complaints about that too?

As I was channel surfing the other day I landed on the scene where the Grinch is watching from the mountain for Christmas not to come and it comes anyway. What a bit of wisdom that is.

In the end, it came with out ribbons! It came without tags! It came without packages, boxes or bags! And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before!
"Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store."

Lighten up everyone. Christmas is coming anyway. ;-)
